Radiation Exposure Radiation Exposure

You've Survived Cancer
Or a Heart Attack!

Will You Survive the Medical Radiation Exposure?

Currently, each year in the United States, a total of 75 million Computed Tomographic (CT Scans) are conducted in the US; moreover, the use of CT continues to grow by more than 10% annually. The profitability of this technology contributes to the increasing ownership of CT Machines, which almost certainly increases their use and the public's Radiation Exposure.

Computed Tomographic, CT Scan, Cat Scan, Interventional Fluoroscopy, X-ray, and Nuclear Medicine procedures all use Ionizing Radiation that increases your Radiation Exposure and Lifetime Cancer Risk.

According to the (New England Journal of Medicine) 33% of all CT Scans are NOT Justified by medical need, and it appears to be likely, 20-35 million adults and, crucially, more than 1 million children per year in the United States are being Irradiated Unnecessarily.

I don't remember the last time I got so sick about a subject. When I started the research for this page I was shocked, and after reading 200 + articles all I can say is I'm more shocked now than when I began. As you read this page remember there is evidence that there is NO SAFE LEVEL of Radiation Exposure.

I want you to answer 2 Questions about CT Scans.

What's your Radiation Exposure?

Would you walk into you Doctors office and allow him to take 100 chest X-rays of you or a loved one?

Would you even consider allowing some crazy person to take 500 chest X-rays of you or a loved one?

I'll help you out here,     Hell NO!

The Radiation Exposure you get from a single CT Scan is equal to 100 - 500 conventional Chest X-rays. It's never been shown directly that CT Scans increases Cancer Risk "because there has never been a study", but there is extensive epidemiologic and biologic evidence that Ionizing-Radiation exposure is known to increase the Risk of Cancer, in particular, Radiation in high doses.

Interventional Fluoroscopy

Interventional Fluoroscopy is used when a heart stint or a pacemaker is put in place, and the only thing I can say is "whoa", because this procedure will blast your body with up to 3,500 times the Radiation of a single chest X-ray. I was reading a pdf. called (What is Nuclear Medicine) that patients getting ready to under go Interventional Fluoroscopy are given to read. The strange thing is no where in the brochure is the Massive Radiation Exposure disclosed.

Hippocratic Oath Here is the sad thing CT Scanners have been in use for 30 years, and no one has taken the time to do a study of the effects of CT's Ionizing-Radiation. The I will do No Harm of the Physician's Hippocratic Oath is disregarded because they have not done the needed study's (Ignorance in this case is not Bliss).

Ionizing Radiation and Cancer Risk

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has listed medical X-rays as a known Carcinogen. There is a(Lifetime Risk) for developing Cancer from Medical Test and Treatment's using Ionizing Radiation. Physicians are often subject to significant pressures, from the medical system, and the public, to order CT Studies, even when they are not really necessary or even when alternatives exist.

The Cancer Risks are highly dependent on age because both the doses and the risks per unit dose of Ionizing-Radiation are age-dependent. Even though doses are higher for head scans, the risks are higher for abdominal scans because the digestive organs are more sensitive than the brain to Radiation-Induced Cancer. The Younger You are at the time of the Ionizing-Radiation procedure the HIGHER Your Lifetime Risk for developing Cancer.

This is a list of Cancers the US. Government publicly listed in 1988 as caused by the effects of Ionizing Radiation. This is by no means a complete list of the diseases caused by Ionizing Radiation;

breast, bile ducts, esophagus, gall bladder, leukemia (except chronic lymphocytic leukemia), liver (unless cirrhosis or hepatitis B is indicated), lung, lymphomas (except Hodgkin's disease), multiple myeloma, pancreas, pharynx, salivary gland, skin, small intestine, stomach, thyroid, urinary tract.

I know you are asking, why wouldn't My Doctor tell me there
is that much Radiation Exposure in a CT Scan?    I don't Know ???

Here is a video produced by the United States Government in the 1950's, You be the judge of what We KNOW about RADIATION Today compared to what we were "told to believe" in the 1950's.

When the Atmospheric Nuclear Testing ended in 1963, no medical follow-up was ever conducted by the Atomic Energy Commission or Department of Defense. There was never any government-sponsored medical surveillance of its "atomic test subjects," nor any attempt on the part of the government to contact those who participated in the atomic tests and alert them to the fact their health was potentially at risk. (Atomic Veterans of America)

God I really hope we don't wake up someday and find ourselves asking if it was worth allowing the Corporate Medical Industry to operate unabated and play Russian Roulette with 60,000,0000 people's lives every year?

Radiation Exposure damages cells at the DNA level, and it also damages tissues, organs, as well as shuts down the immune system, putting the whole body at risk for possible future disease.

The American College of Radiology ACR published, "A Primer on Radiation Risk" twenty years ago with calculations of CT and plain film risk by Dr. Joel Grey, then at the MAO Clinic. If there was even an ounce of truth in Dr. Grey's data we have caused thousands of Fatal Radiation Induced Cancers that should have been avoided with a little prudence and judgment.

(Initiative to Reduce Unnecessary Radiation Exposure from Medical Imaging) Feb. 2010

Because CT Fluoroscopy, and Nuclear Medicine procedures involve repeated or extended Exposure to Radiation, these types of exams are associated with a higher radiation dose than Projection Radiography. For example, the adult effective dose from a CT Exam of the head is equivalent to the adult effective dose from roughly 100 Chest x-rays. The adult effective dose from a CT Exam of the abdomen is roughly equivalent to the adult effective dose from roughly 400 Chest x-rays.

(See Table 1) below, for the range of doses from various CT, Fluoroscopy, and Nuclear Medicine procedures. While CT, Interventional Fluoroscopy, and Nuclear Medicine studies make up only approximately 26% of the imaging procedures using radiation that are conducted annually in the U.S., they contribute 89% of the total yearly Radiation Exposure for Medical Imaging.

According to a March 2009 report by the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP), the total U.S. population's exposure to Ionizing Radiation has nearly doubled over the past two decades. This rise is largely attributable to increased exposure from Nuclear Medicine, and CT Interventional Fluoroscopy.

NCRP estimates that 67 million CT Scans, 18 million Nuclear Medicine procedures, and 17 million Interventional Fluoroscopy procedures were performed in the U.S. in 2006, and the authors predict that these figures will continue to grow. FDA's. Initiative to Reduce Unnecessary Radiation Exposure from Medical Imaging pdf. (opens in new window)

Your decision to have an X-ray exam should be based on the likelihood of benefit from the exam and the potential "Lifetime Risk" of the Ionizing Radiation. For low dose examinations, usually those that involve only X-ray films taken by a X-ray tech, this is absolutely a much lower dose than CT Scans and can be accomplished with minimum risk.

For higher dose exams such as Computed Tomography (CT) scans and those involving the use of contrast materials such as barium or iodine, the radiologist should consider your past history of exposure to X-rays. If you have had frequent X-ray exams and change health care providers, You should keep a record of your x-ray history for yourself.

It is of the utmost importance to tell your doctor if you may be pregnant before having any type of X-ray exam that involves the abdomen or pelvic region. Actually any time you suspect you may be pregnant X-ray's should be considered with extreme caution for the fetus at every stage of the pregnancy.

Most Doctors believe the risk of developing cancer from Radiation Exposure is not a major concern when compared to the benefits of the procedure they are ordering. But nearly 70% of Doctors have no idea of just how much Radioactive Elements the CT or Interventional Fluoroscopy deposit in the human body, these procedures use Extremely High Doses of Radiation.

Once Radiation enters your body It is there to stay unless it is purposely removed, creating Free Radicals from the cells it comes in contact with. This is why the term "Lifetime Dose" is associated with ALL types of Radiation not just with Nuclear Power plants, or Nuclear Weapons (Depleted Uranium). In humans, animals and plants, this ionizing effect alters the DNA code in cells causing cell mutation. Through this, the altered cells are reproduced through cell division which may then form cancerous growths.

Cancer Survivors

25% of Cancer Survivors will experience a Secondary Cancer in their lifetime that is not related to their Primary Cancer.   WHY?

1st. Cancer is a Symptom not just a Disease.

2nd. Oncoligist use Radiation Therapy (that is a Known Cancer causing carcinogen), Surgery, and Chemo Therapy, as their weapons to fight Cancer without ever looking for or finding the CAUSE of the Cancer in the first place.

3rd. The high doses of Ionizing-Radiation will cause what is called a double strand break of your DNA. and this produces out of control cells called free radicals or mutations of the damaged cells (Cancerous Cells).

The unexplained symptoms of Ionizing-Radiation will include but not limited to is fatigue, lethargy, a weakened immune system, tumors, unexplained illnesses, anemia, genetic damage, cancer, leukemia, cataracts. A person exposed to Ionizing-Radiation can develop all sorts of conditions that just don't seem to respond to medicine ... and for which there doesn't seem to be any explanation.

If your Doctor could get the same results with another test without the Radiation Exposure., would that influence your decision and choice? There is Medical testing that does not expose you to Ionizing Radiation that will produce the results your Doctor is looking for, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). the Ultra Sound are great places to start.

Whole body MRI is suitable for routine use in hospitals, as the procedure takes less than an hour and the images are of high resolution. The technique provides detailed images of different organ systems without exposing the patient to ionizing radiation, which is particularly advantageous in oncology. With the help of different sequence techniques, the examination protocol can be optimized to give highly detailed results.

I have not disregarded the Physicians decision to use Radiation in exams to look for answers when none can be found. Where I draw the line is ordering an exam that is not needed and this seams to be around 22,000,000 that's Millions per year (New England Journal of Medicine).

Any radiation exposure is known to increase the risk of cancer, in particular radiation in high doses. There are report's that say for every 2,000 people getting a Full-Body CT scan twice in a year, one (1) can be expected to contract a fatal cancer. Not very good odds.

Without a doubt I've said a whole lot in a short page, and I really hope your Doctor is up front with you about the Radiation Exposure associated for the test he/she is ordering. Ionizing Radiation is a known cause of Cancer with a direct link to Computed Tomographic, CT Scan, Cat Scan, Interventional Fluoroscopy, and Nuclear Medicine procedures, you should be fully informed and allowed to make that decision.

I really want you to research what I've said about Radiation Exposure (Don't just take my word for it).
